Five minutes studies.
Black conté stick on a purple support.
Black conté stick on greyish brown paper.
Watercolour drawing.
Red chalk pencil.
Fountain pen.
Fountain pen on greyish brown support.
Two self-portraits.
Red chalks on a light brown support.
Charcoal, conté and white pencil on a light brown paper.
In this case the conté produced the best results, I feel,
I found it enjoyable to use, it felt good in the hand (feeling comfortable, increases confidence,)
and I think it was easier to get a range of tones.
They both, are recognisable as me,
but the second, more so.
The first drawing has less of a likeness, this, I think, is mainly due to the eyes being too small.
I think the five minute sketches were a great help, serving as a worm-up, I don't like going into a sustained work cold (as it were.)
It is rather hard to get an interesting angle when looking into a looking-glass, I had thought about having the mirror up high, but I didn't think I could hold this pose for a sufficient length of time.
I tried to sit for a three quarter view, but found myself drifting round towards the mirror.
But I hope that I was able to treat a fairly uninteresting angle, interestingly.
