Eyes, conté sticks.
"The eyes are the window of the soul."
Shakespeare.
Mouth, brown pencil.
Tried my best at drawing a smiling mouth
(bottom right-hand corner)
you can't really do studies of the mouth with out trying this dreaded subject.
A smile is so much in the eyes as well as the mouth, it is hard to not make it look like a grimace.
Nose, brown pencil.
Ears, fountain pen.
Wish I had, had more time for these studies of individual features...
Red, purple, blue and black conté stick.
First attempt.
This is my seven year old sister, she sat very well for me.
I set her up in a chair with a light coming slightly down from her right.
The drawing was looking all right at the beginning, but I think it went a bit haywire.
Areas like the eyes needed pinpoint clarification,
the marks I made (although attempting to be bold and interesting) are just too clumsy.
I spent time working out the proportions,
the structure and the shapes are all right,
it was just the lines and marks I used over the top of that planing, wrecked it to a certain extent.
The mouth remains quite good, though, I like the way there are so few marks making it up.
Purple, blue and black conté stick.
Second attempt.
This is a bit better, I think.
The tones are more subtle and varied, I could concentrate on this when just using Purple, blue and black.
I don't like the mouth in this one at all, its too small and too low down.
A plus, there is a bit of a likeness,
unnecessary but pleasing.
Close up.
A thing I noticed, was that, after spraying the portrait with fixative, the ever so slight dampness of it affected the conté, blurring and also intensifying the pigment on the page.....
quite a subtle and curious effect.
