For "Mixed Media"
I used
Felt tip pens,
Sepia ink,
Wax crayons,
Findliners,
White chalk,
and
Tipp-Ex.
I collected together some objects,
(the idea, in the back of my head, being that they all were the sort of thing you might fine in a attic.)
I set up a light coming from the top slightly to the right.
I am still not sure if I like the the way the edges of the saucers are cropped out of the composition...but its quite interesting.
Started by sketching the outlines and negative shapes with a black felt tip.
A bit more pen and then a sepia ink wash using the same Chinese brush from the previous exercise.
But before putting down my wash, I used the wax resist technique with a white crayons in the areas I wanted to keep bright.
When the wash was dry I put a bit more pen in, and some different tones of brown crayons in the background and some blue and black crayons in the mettle top of the coffee grinder.
Some more ink to darken the shadows.
Blue fineliner (with water to soften it) and blue crayons, both to indicate the patten on the tea cup and the saucers. Also more black felt tip pen over the drawing.
With the pen and a smaller brush dipped sepia ink, I darkened, deepened and defined areas with cross-hatching marks.
And also put some more blue crayons on the further away saucer.
Pen and crayons on the background and shadows. And some chalk highlights.
And lastly Tipp-Ex on the brightest points of the highlights.
This was a fun exercise, (I must remember that it is only an exercise...I think I am spending too much time on all of the work.)
I am fairly pleased with this drawing, the part I like the least is the tea cup, the shape isn't quite right...and I am not sure if the lighting on it is either.
I quite like the bears face,
(from an aesthetic point of view)
it is the area I worked on most, because I wanted it to be the focal point of composition.
